I decided to write this post when I saw a tweet from a mega Church in Europe when it was time for offering collections few minutes ago:”Sow into a good ground and reap a harvest! Attach your seed to fertile ground!”
There are two misconceptions about “giving” that this post will like to address:
1)That when you give to a blessed man(wealthy, successful, influential, rich),you will be blessed in return. So,you rather give to someone who you call(or calls himself) a ‘fertile ground’ than the poor.
2)That a poor person needs to sow into a rich person’s life for him to come out of poverty! That the poor needs to sow himself out of poverty. The rich giving to the poor is downplayed but the poor should give to the rich!
Brethren, are all these assertions true.If they are true,do they have any scriptural backings? What does the Bible teach about “giving”? Does the Bible say the poor should give to the rich or the reverse? Let’s study the Bible together:
“Whoever gives to the poor lacks nothing. Whoever ignores the poor receives many curses.-Prov 28:27
“Kindness to the poor is a loan to the LORD, and He will give a reward to the lender.”-Prov 19:17
“The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor”-Prov 22:9
“Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the LORD delivers him;the LORD protects him and keeps him alive; he is called blessed in the land; you do not give him up to the will of his enemies, the LORD sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health”-Psalm 41:1-3
“And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.”-Act 2:44-45
“And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do? John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry-Luke 3:10-11
The reverse is the norm today: The poor man with no shirt is being asked to sow ‘nothing’ to the rich man with two shirts because the latter is a ‘fertile ground’).
Heresy at its peak!
“Jesus said to him(rich boy), “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”-Matthew 19:21
“James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me…All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.”-Gal 2:9-10
Based on the above: Do the rich give to the poor or the poor people give to the rich?
It is the rich people that should bless the poor! The Bible didn’t say the poor should sow to the rich(fertile ground) to get out of poverty.Rather, the rich should bless the poor, and God would repay back the rich with more blessing.
Jesus himself said this:
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’-Matt 25:35-36.
Where did we now get this idea of ‘sowing on fertile ground’? Who brought this kind of teaching into the Church of God? What were their motives? May God help us!
I heard some people have even gotten to the point where they try to get the account numbers of ‘successful’ men/women of God in order to sow into those accounts. They believe these account numbers are fertile ground! Meanwhile, they neglect the poor around them. There is nothing wrong in giving to men of God…In fact there is everything wrong when you don’t give to them:”Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward…” But there is a problem when you now think they are ‘money-doubling’ machines. That is a spirit of witchcraft in operation!
The greater blesses the lesser not the reverse!
“But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.” -Heb 7:7 “No one can deny that the more important person blesses the less important person”(GWT)
The words ‘fertile ground/soil’ and “seed” were found in the parable of the Sower.Jesus clearly explained what the fertile ground and the Seed meant.
The fertile ground is a good heart.
The seed is the word of God.”-Luke 8:11
If Jesus says the seed is the word of God,why do you now give it a different nomenclature? I was spellbound when I heard that someone said this:
“If you sow into the life of a believer you will receive 30 fold increase, it’s less if it is into the life of an unbeliever. If you sow into the life of a Pastor you receive 60 fold, while if you sow into the life of an overall head you will receive 100 fold!”
Please note that above quotation is not true.It is a complete distortion of God’s Word.
I have not said you should not give to church, men of God etc.Neither have I said the poor are the only ones you should give to.
Give, give and give whether to the poor, rich, tall, short, anointed, destitute or physically challenged…No one can outgive God.
Your giving is to God and He will reward you accordingly. It doesn’t matter whether you give it to a rich person/institution(fertile ground) or to a poor person/institution.God brings increase in all whether it is Paul that plants or it is Apollos that waters.God does not have a special formula He uses to increase your harvest when you give to the rich or to mark you down when you give to the poor.In fact God will rather want you to give to the poor than the rich! However, giving to the propagation of the Gospel has eternal values.
In conclusion,if you have a gift of £100 that can only be given to either of these two sets of people: A rich man and a poor man.Who do the Scriptures say you should prioritize?
You get my point? Yeah!
Stay blessed and rapturable.
