Why Galileo Galilei was put under house arrest

Galileo discovered that the Earth revolves around the Sun and not the other way around.

People in his days had the belief that was contrary to that.They believed the Sun revolved around the Earth.

He then published his findings in Italian and not the usual Latin,so the masses could read it.

NB:Latin was accessible then to only the academics.

He provided evidence that the previous belief about the Earth was incorrect.

However,He met a stiff resistance from the elites.

The pope at that time condemned Galileo to house arrest!

Today,we know better that Galileo was right.Truly,the Earth revolves around the Sun.

But why do people resist change in their belief especially when there is a superior reasoning?

Why is it that when a new viewpoint is presented,it is difficult for people to change their perspectives?
